Surf Fishing Morro Bay

Print E-mail

One of the first stops we made for a little surf fly fishing was at Morro Bay.  It's fairly flat and sports some nice rock formations that can be easily walked out onto.

I got a couple of strikes from what I believe were Corbina.  On the second strike I saw the fish bend and flash before he spit the hook.  The flash was mostly white with a streak of pink (probably just a trick of light and reflection), and the body was long and slender.  Certainly not a surf perch.

Because of the rock formations, the waves break early and roll in.  I wish I had more time to fish this spot, but we were in travel-mode so I only worked it for about an hour mid-day.  I think this spot could be very productive in lower light and high tide.

As with all coastal fishing locations, the wind blew in pretty good.  Short roll casts from the rocks put me in about 8 - 10 feet of water.
