Piru Creek Oct 2009 Report |
|
The water is very skinny and most of the decent pools that I am used to fishing on Upper Piru Creek are nothing more than puddles.
It wasn't a wasted trip, but there weren't too many pockets that looked capable of sustaining life.
This small pool is pretty deep in the winter. It's the first time I have seen the bottom, which will help when the flows return.
The water is very clear now, but in the winter months runoff and rain water will drop the clarity significantly.
All day my nymph returned to me with one of these little buggers impaled on the hook.
Dunno, but I'm guessing caddis.
On the hike back to my ride I did catch a decent 'bow that was hiding under a small rock.
I had cast over the rock and let it dead drift toward the overhang. The line got tight, I set the hook and it felt like it was snagged. Luckily I walked upstream and confirmed my suspicion that it wasn't snagged, instead this beautiful wild trout was just refusing to leave his hiding hole.
Pretty fun for a warm-up trip, but I'm not ready to say that my local creek is ready for prime-time yet.
