Piru Creek Feb 2010 Report
Frenchman's Flat at Piru Creek - Report for Feb 2010 with Video: I snuck out of work early and headed to the creek in hopes of getting a couple of the small, but beautiful, wild Rainbow Trout that occupy the waters. The flow rate was about twice what I am used to seeing at this time of year and this combined with the stained water made it a tough afternoon.
I wish that California had the rainfall to sustain this type of flow. Then the creek might be better suited to hold bigger fish, but that's just dreaming. Anyway, the reality is that this rapid increase in flow seems to have driven the trout deep to hunker down where the flow is slower.
I managed two hits and missed them both. Neither were very robust takes.
I spoke to a couple of fishermen that claimed to have caught a couple, so now more than ever, it must be about finding where they are holding until the flows drop again.
Because the water is stained, try fishing dark flies (black) and add weight until the nymph hangs once on the bottom, then pull it up and take off a little weight. This should keep your fly down deep where they are probably sitting. This is how I managed the two strikes I did get.
