First Time Fly-Fishing |

Way back - on Feb 22 of 2009, I took a good friend fishing. It was his first fly-fishing attempt and the results were pretty typical... maybe even a bit above average. I've said it before, and I will say it again; If you want to catch fish today, don't attempt to learn how to fly fish. If you want to enjoy a hobby that like golf or chess will be impossible to easily master; you've found what you are looking for.
This is a shot of Shaun on his first outing and his valiant attempt at Czech nymphing (no indicator, just you, a good connection to your nymph and your ability to detect the softest hit). I have been nymphing in this manner since I started. To be honest, I could never properly rig a dropper (I can now) or figure out the yarn strike indicators, so I applied what I learned in a seminar by Ed Engle on "European-style Nymphing".
So, as is customary; I caught and he didn't. But, breaking with tradition, Shaun managed to feel several good tugs on his first day out. Czech nymphing is almost synonymous with missing strikes, so I was pleased that he got to feel the warm satisfaction of enticing a tug from a wary trout.
Here's another shot of Shaun focused on the water, his line, the slack, water current, and his inability to get a date.
Now, I want to share about the most disturbing thing I have seen at Piru Creek to date - and I have seen some pretty outrageous behavior at Frenchmans.
Of course it's possible that this wasn't an act of vandalism, but Piru Creek doesn't always attract honest hard working folk looking to relax. Sometimes it brings out the idiots. Lock your car. Don't leave it overnight, and take your valuables with you.
