How to dye feathers for fly tyingI have read that feathers can be dyed at home using the sugar-less Kool-aid packets or just food coloring. I was at the store today and noticed that the egg dying kits are available for Easter. This got me thinking...
 This is the good stuff. Both products tested out the same, but I like the cups I got with Dudley's. Test #1 (Winner) Note: Roughly half the suggested water/vinegar for eggs. 1/2 Blue tablet 1/2 Yellow tablet 1/4 Cup of hot water 2 Tablespoons of vinegar Test #2 1/2 Blue tablet 1/2 Yellow tablet 1 Tablespoon of hot water 1Tablespoons of vinegar The only difference between the two groups was how much it made. The dye took to the feather pretty much the same.  Kool-aid does not work well. I did get the black cherry flavor to work somewhat for making orange. It was so bad that it seemed pointless to even bore you with the photos. Kool-aid does win the 'Best Smelling' award.  Finished set: Flash on camera off. Finished feathers soaked in dye (test group #1) for 4 minutes.  Finished set: Flash on camera on. In closing: It might make a better green if there was less yellow than blue. I still need to tie them up and fish 'em to see how long the color holds up, but if it lasts half as long on feathers as it does on my hands... |
